Jay Nelson - Helisledding
April 30, 01 - page2

The film crews were set. the excitment was high.
and the sun was beginning to set.
It is do or die.
(don't say that!)

Because today Jay is riding for the Sledneck films,
and he is going for "Hangoverhelper" so named by the Out of Bounds Heliskiers,
for the simple reason that when your done with this run, your hangover is gone!
(By the way, Hangoverhelper is the biggest chute in the center of the tallest mountain in this photo.)
To bad to, 'cause I really liked that kid.
-
I didn't want to load another photo of the same thing so look at the above photo.
The bowl got dark and the snow was no good, so instead of riding the face,
Jay took the narrow ridge from the top down to the left of the photo.
Then he made a huge drop down the back into a lesser bowl (lesser to him)
and made a grand wipeout at about 80mph when he hit a hard slide.
You can find the footage in the Slednecks 4 video!

We didn't get much word until we saw the ship come back with most of a sled hung under it,
but we did get the message that there was a huge crash and Jay was mostly ok.

At first glance the sled looked in great shape, but closer observation showed the torment he put it through.
Although the engin was packed with snow she was in remarkably good shape, the pipes were sound too.
But the rails were bent more that 3" as if the track was in a perpetual halfpipe,
and the trailing arms both had curves to them like they wanted to go right.
The seat was pulled loose and the rear of the tunnel was destroyed, but all in all it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Here is Jay. He is not to bad for the wear either.
Bent his knee out of shape and feels a bit banged up,
but still he says he is definitely coming back next year to try her again!
Go figure.
