You can see between these next two photos the terrain is the same but the river is quite different.
For some reason, the river begins to builds it's banks dramatically here, I imagine it is because it backs up and ice dams. Regardless, it is getting quite tricky to cross now.
Here we have made it several miles up the river to the second normally un-crossable section. The river in a deliberate effort to block our way, runs from one side, across the valley to the other mountain. With steep banks and even avalanches, this is usually the end of the line.
If you don't get stopped about a mile back at the "Kitchen wall" you often find your way much more difficult at each crossing, but to cross here is never easy and mostly un-crossable,
